The Netherlands beat Denmark 4-2 in the Women's EURO 2017 final at the FC Twente Stadion in Enschede, winning the tournament as hosts with a perfect record of six wins from six.
Nadia Nadim's penalty on 6 minutes put Denmark ahead, Vivianne Miedema levelled on 10, Lieke Martens made it 2-1 on 28 and Pernille Harder equalised on 33 for 2-2 at the break. Sherida Spitse restored the lead on 51, with a free-kick in her own club stadium, and Miedema added the fourth on 89.
Their route: 1-0 against Norway, 1-0 against Denmark and 2-1 against Belgium to top Group A, then 2-0 against Sweden in the quarter-finals through a Martens free-kick and Miedema's first goal of the tournament, and 3-0 against England in the semi-finals. The win made the Netherlands only the fourth different nation to take the title and the first new champion since West Germany in 1989; the first hosts to win since Germany in 2001; and only the second nation after Germany to have been both men's and women's European champions.
All six Netherlands matches sold out, for an aggregate attendance of 110,897 - a record for a single nation at a Women's EURO. The opening win over Norway in Utrecht drew a Dutch women's record crowd of 21,732, and the semi-final in Enschede a semi-final record of 27,093.
The title came after a mid-cycle change of coach. A 1-0 home defeat by England in November 2016 was the Netherlands' fifth loss in eight games, and Arjan van der Laan was replaced by his assistant Sarina Wiegman, working with the experienced Foppe de Haan. Wiegman then won eight of the side's 11 friendlies in 2017.
Lieke Martens was named player of the tournament, Miedema finished the knockout stage with four goals, and Mandy van den Berg and Sherida Spitse lifted the trophy together as the side's twin captains.
